KIWISKATE
The very best learn to skate programme in New Zealand developed for our Kiwi Kids.
The Kiwiskate programme has been developed by the New Zealand Ice Figure Skating Association (NZIFSA) to introduce people of all ages into ice skating, and to develop basic skills on ice.
The main objectives of the Kiwiskate programme are to improve skaters confidence and skills on the ice. A series of skating skills tests have been developed by the NZIFSA and skaters work through a series of 14 badges being assessed against the badge requirements at each level as they move through the programme. The programme takes skaters from their first time stepping onto the ice through to competitive level. New skaters are assigned to a Kiwiskate level according to their skating experience and age.
The Kiwiskate programme teaches the basics of skating forwards and backwards, as well as stopping, gliding, and turning. Whether a skater wishes to progress into figure skating, Ice hockey or just be confident on the ice, these are the important basics to help them achieve their goal.
Skaters are taught in small groups a variety of skills that help them to improve their confidence and balance on the ice. There is always an emphasis on fun and enjoyment on the ice, with our experienced coaches delivering a programme that is engaging for the skaters, including games that help to reinforce the skills being taught.
The Kiwiskate programme is designed to build on skills from the previous badge, so it is important that a skater masters all the skills on a badge before progressing to the next badge level. Skaters are assessed throughout the season by their coach. When they have passed the skills for their current badge, they will begin working on skills from the next badge.
As a skater moves through the Kiwiskate program, the club offers those skaters an extra development session This is designed to complement the last two Kiwiskate badges and is delivered as an extra group lesson that a skater attends as well as their regular Kiwiskate lessons. This gives our skaters more opportunities to upskill and experience what the sport of figure skating has to offer.
Towards the end of the season all our Kiwiskaters have an opportunity to share the amazing skills they have learnt through a fun competition our - Kiwiskate Club Champs. This is always an afternoon of celebration, with skaters having the opportunity to show off their best moves, and cheer on their friends. All our Kiwiskaters are also invited to be in our Clubs end of season Ice Show, a great opportunity to show family, friends, and the wider community their skills, in a fun extravaganza on ice.
